New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera had surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder and is expected to resume throwing in three months, a month ahead of spring training. New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek operated at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Altchek also operated on catcher Jorge Posada's shoulder last summer.

Boston police detective William Dunn, center, gets doused by Boston Red Sox relief pitchers, including Manny Delcarmen (17) and Justin Masterson, right, after Game 4 of baseball's American League division series in Boston, Monday, Oct. 6, 2008. The Red Sox won 3-2 to advance to the AL championship series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Boston Red Sox brushed aside the 100-win Angels in four games, dismissing their best-in-baseball regular season as last month's news. When it turns to October, no one dominates like Boston. Jason Bay scored with a headfirst slide on Jed Lowrie's two-out single in the ninth inning and the defending World Series champions took advantage of a botched suicide squeeze, beating Los Angeles 3-2 Monday...

Even Reggie Bush's record-tying two punt returns for touchdowns couldn't make up for New Orleans' numerous...

Chicago White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye hangs his head in the outfield after a throw on which Tampa Bay Rays' Jason Bartlett scored in the seventh inning of Game 4 of the American League division baseball series Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in Chicago. The White Sox lost 6-2 and were eliminated from postseason play.

They rushed toward the mound, these remarkable Rays, and immediately formed a circle. Jumping together like fraternity brothers, they resembled party regulars in the postseason. Worst in the majors last year, Tampa Bay will play for a spot in the World Series. "It means everything. We've been at the bottom of the barrel for so long," B.J.

Third baseman Mike Lowell was removed from Boston's division series roster on Monday because of a right hip strain. He would be ineligible to play in the AL championship series if the Red Sox advance past their first-round opponent, the Los Angeles Angels. Last year's World Series MVP, Lowell also has a torn labrum in his right hip.
